Al leer lo que Gilliam menciona en su entrevista, nos preguntamos, ¿cuánto de estos acontecimientos aún permanecen en los Gobiernos actuales? Podemos verlo desde los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre de 2003, con el mensaje de Bush y su afirmativa a buscar mayor información de los terroristas para nuestra protección, con la aprobación de la Acta Patriótica
Después de los actos terroristas del 11 de septiembre de 2001, el Presidente Bush firmó la Ley Patriótica, con el objetivo de ampliar la capacidad de control del Estado en aras de combatir el terrorismo, mejorado la capacidad de las distintas agencias de seguridad estadounidenses al coordinarlas y dotarlas de mayores poderes de vigilancia contra los delitos de terrorismo (Acta Patriótica, 2008). Veamos ahora un extracto que ofrece información acerca del Acta Patriótica:
“The USA PATRIOT Act, commonly known as the PATRIOT Act,that U.S. President George Walker Bush signed into law on October 26, 2001. The contrived acronym stands for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001" (Public Law,Pub.L.107-56) (USA Patriot Act, 2008).
The Act increases the ability of law enforcement agencies to search telephone, e-mail communications, medical, financial and other records; eases restrictions on foreign intelligence gathering within the United States; expands the Secretary of the Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign individuals and entities; and enhances the discretion of law enforcement and immigration authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants suspected of terrorism-related acts. The act also expands the definition of terrorism to include domestic terrorism, thus enlarging the number of activities to which the USA PATRIOT Act’s expanded law enforcement powers can be applied” (USA Patriot Act, 2008).
